sans terre (2018) for string quartet

10’30”

Written for the Daedalus Quartet. Performed 19 Jan 2019 in Davis, CA

"Some, however, would derive the word from sans terre, without land or a home, which, therefore, in the good sense, will mean, having no particular home, but equally at home everywhere." Henry David Thoreau, Walking (1861)

This piece was inspired by one of my "saunterings" along the Pacific Coast in California, on Ten Mile Beach at the edge of Point Reyes peninsula. It's a place where I feel simultaneously at home and at sea. -D.G.
